The Illustrated Word

in Stained Glass Patterns

Dear Readers,

Everyone loves a gift, especially during the holidays. The activities of the next few months are full of gifts, both tangible and intangible, that add to the enjoyment of the season.

The Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu once wrote: "While the tangible has its advantages, it is the intangible that makes it useful." I'm happy to

say that the network here at Glass Patterns Quarterly is ready to help with both.

The GPQ Fall 2012 issue is brimming with tangible inspiration that you will find throughout its pages, with everything from commemorative pattern designs to festive gift ideas spanning the entire fall lineup of feasts and festivals. There is even a reference for

ready-to-buy items in our 2012 Holiday Gift Guide.

Now it's time to turn your attention inward to the intangible---the gift of an experience

that will resonate in your mind-the gift of a class or a workshop for yourself. What? You

don't have time? Why not try a Glass Expert Webinar offered through the network at

GPQ, no traveling required!  See our recently formed Ask the Expert series where you can log in to real-time demonstrations presented by respected instructors, complete with on-screen questions, answers, and downloadable notes. We are currently connecting with highly sought-after experts to share their information in upcoming live, educational workshops. Don't let the high-tech nature of this scare you away. If you can check your e-mail, then you can log in to a Webinar. During a past workshop from sand artist, David Alcala, one student told us she thought it was an amazing educational experience. "Having the ability to watch the real-time demo and hear his comments as well as watch the written comments of the other participants was really special."

No doubt, the holiday season ahead will be filled with activity. The creative, one-of-a kind

gifts we lovingly invent for our friends, family, and customers bring joy to the senses.
Reaffirming the ancient truism that giving, no matter what the form, is the root of happiness,

Reader's Corner!

The best place to learn and enjoy glass is by taking a class at a local stained glass retailer. Here you'll meet people of like mind and similar interests. We would like for you to meet, Eloyne and Bradley Erickson, Owner of Grand Central Stained Glass & Graphics, in St. Petersburg, Florida. The store is open six days a week and draws its customers from a region that encompasses Tampa, Tampa Bay, Sarasota, and St. Petersburg.  Eloyne schedules 11 classes in stained glass, fused glass, and jewelry making for beginning to intermediate students and usually has six other project-oriented classes going as well.  The formula for success that Eloyne and Bradley Erickson derived from their years building a successful glass retail shop is simple if not easy:  Attend to the needs of your customers. Offer good products. Be involved in your community. Stay aware of your costs. Work hard and long, and enjoy your success. This article was published in Glass Art's November/December 2012 magazine. Glass Art provides inspiration and tips through the substantial profiles featured each quarter. In addition to these profiles, we also offer regular features on managing your glass business, marketing artwork, and keeping up with the latest glass industry news and new product announcements. Why not order a Subscription today!
