Evolution of a Glass Artist

Managing Editor Delynn Ellis reminds us of the journey that glass artists travel, which begins with the first cut made in a piece of glass. From there, they learn how to score, break, and grind, and find projects that will eventually help to make use of the variety of leftover glass scraps. Then it’s on to fusing and many other projects, all of which can be found within the pages of Glass Patterns Quarterly.

Geometric Planter and Sconce-An Introduction to Stained Glass

A 5" x 5" square, open-topped plant or candle holder set at an angle for a diamond-shaped appearance. Four 1‑1/4" x 5" strips of clear glue chip are used to construct the sides of the three-dimensional frame, and a 3‑1/2" square piece of Seafoam wispy glass is cut in half on the diagonal to fill the front and back bottom corners. The finished project is hung from a swivel hook. This project was constructed using the copper foil technique.

Citrus Clock

A 13‑1/2" circular clock face created with sections of Gold Water Silver Coats glass cut in the shape of citrus fruit sections. The citrus section of the clock face is finished with a two-part border of complementary colors. A purchased clock mechanism completes the project. Tips are included for selecting the correct size clock hands and for installing the mechanism after the glass clock face is finished. This project was constructed using the copper foil technique.

Spirit of Aloha-Moonlight Hula

A 10‑1/2" x 14‑1/2" stained glass panel depicting an Hawaiian hula dancer walking along a moonlit beach. The floral design elements of her lei are decorated with frit and fused before being incorporated into the panel. An optional method for plating the moonlight on the ocean is also included. The details of the dancer’s face are added with glass paint. This project was constructed using copper foil and fusing techniques.

Monstera Deliciosa-Discovering Art in Nature’s Designs

A 12" x 12" panel featuring a large, exotic tropical leaf pattern created by tracing the shape of a real leaf onto copper sheet foil, adding a double glass border around the panel, and finishing the edges with zinc came or a wooden frame. For the final touches, decorative solder and patina are added to the background portion of the design. This project was constructed using the copper foil technique.

One Mosaic Flowerpot . . . Three Designs-Iris, Tiger Lily, and Calla Lily

A set of three 11" diameter x 17" tall purchased flowerpots decorated with mosaics created from nipped and cut glass pieces plus dichroic glass nuggets and found objects such as old jewelry pieces. Tips are offered for ensuring success with fitting the border pieces that are used for the tops of the pots. A firing schedule is also provided for fusing design elements for the mosaic designs as desired. Nonsanded grout is used to finish and seal the mosaic designs on the flowerpots.

Nautilus

A 17" x 25" stained glass panel featuring a stylized version of a chambered nautilus. The design is from Aanraku Eclectic II, Vol. 2, From the Original Collection by Hiroyuki Kobayashi and Jeffrey Castaline of Aanraku Glass Studios. The glass colors can easily be changed to fit any decor as desired. This project was constructed using the copper foil technique.

Fused Majestic Monarch
Design, Fabrication, and Text by Wesley R. Wong

Instructions for making two different types of 4" x 8" free-form fused monarch butterflies. Once the various colored sections of the wings are cut, the butterfly can be assembled by attaching the body to the wings and firing them together to produce a complete butterfly after firing. A second method fuses the body separately from the wings and is suitable for incorporating the butterfly into a mosaic project.

Summer Fantasy

A 24" x 24" stained glass panel with a beautiful, delicate Oriental design. The pattern lines are optimally placed to become an integral part of the design, and the careful selection of glass adds realism, depth, and texture to the flowers, leaves, and especially the bird’s plumage. The pattern is one of twenty-six that can be found in Aanraku Eclectic V: From the Original Collection by Aanraku Glass Studios. This project was constructed using the copper foil technique.

Graffiti Bowl-Creating a Blown Glass Shape without a Pipe or Punty

Instructions for creating a fused and slumped footed bowl. The foot is added using the Wardell F900 Stackable Fusing Foot Rings and C105 Foot Casting Mold. Pro tips are offered throughout for the successful preparation and finishing of the project. Firing schedules are also provided for the various stages of creating the bowl.

Fun with Frit-A Fused Glass Finger Lamp

Instructions for creating a fused pendant lamp from sheet glass and various shades of green and blue medium transparent frit. The glass is laid out in a sunburst pattern like the spokes of a wheel with a hole in the center. In a second firing, the frit is tack-fused on. The starburst is then balanced on top of a stainless steel vase mold and heated until all of the fingers bend and fall against the sides. The lamp can also be shaped to fit a lamp base as well as the pendant fixture.

Poppy Sushi Plate

A 12" x 12" fused panel with a bright, cheery poppy design from Paned Expressions CD pattern collection, Pattern Profusion. The glass in the flowers can be cut with a glass cutter, or tile nippers can be used to create a more organic feel. The project was designed to be fully fused and slumped into a mold, but tack-fusing techniques can be used to give the poppies a raised textured.

Royal Buzz
Design by Karen Stephenson, Text by Darlene Welch

A 24" x 20" stained glass panel celebrating the importance of the queen bee. Clear ripple glass is used to suggest the texture of the honey comb. Interest is also added to the design with clear hammered glass as part of the outer border and with the floral vines that provide a frame around the queen. Copper wire can be used to add the bee’s legs and antennae, and the black parts of her body can be created from black glass or tinned and patinated copper sheet foil. This project was constructed using the copper foil technique.

Dancing Dragonfly

A 24" x 20" stained glass panel that provides a colorful reminder of lazy summer days. The careful selection of glass colors, particularly for the lily pads, background, and dragonfly wings, make this scene come to life. Extending the design elements beyond the glass border also adds a three-dimensional feel to the panel. This project was constructed using the copper foil technique.
