Welcome to a new year of creating in glass. We have some outstanding issues lined up with projects from some of our industry's finest artists. They wil not only be offering projects featuring exciting new techniques that they have uncovered, but will also be taking a fresh look at some tried-and-true methods that have stood the test of time.

There is one thing I would ask of you this year and that is to help us promote the glass arts. You can join us on the campaign trail by downloading free promotional banners and flyers from www.glasspatterns.com and posting them on the bulletin boards of the places that you frequent. When you share your love of glass with others, the entire glass community benefits including manufacturers, distributors, retailers, teachers, and ulimately the students. Dragonfly Garden Stake

A 7" X 6" three-dimensional, free-form garden stake. This beginner project shows a dragonfly gracefully perched atop the stake with wings outstretched. The project is constructed using the copper foil technique.

Ruby Slipper

Glass Mosaic Planter

design by Carol Champion

A Grouted ruby and mirrored-glass planter. This mosaic planter is reminiscent of the ruby slipper in The Wizard of Oz and is made using a leather shoe as the mosaic base. The small glass diamond shapes used to cover the shoe are cut using the Beetle Bits cutting system and are applied with the use of weatherproof caulking. The glass is then grouted and can receive added sparkle by applying a glitter paint wash for planters that will remain under cover from the elements.

A set of 4" x 5" and 4" x 3-1/2" free-form suncatchers. These birds are part of the well-loved designs of Casey Koller, who offered his work through various shops and catalogs, including the National Audubon Society Gift Shop and Catalog. The projects were constructed using the copper foil technique.

The best place to learn and enjoy glass is by taking a class at a local stained glass retailer. Here you'll meet people of like mind and similar interests. We would like for you to meet, Laura Hallock, Owner of Hallock Stained Glass, in Lexington, Kentucky. In her sixteen years as a retailer, Hallock has moved her store three times in response to shifting economic winds. While she makes no pretense of being able to predict economic trends, Laura has developed some hardheaded practicality in dealing with this impact.
